What is Stoicism?

Stoicism, originating from the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Romans, finds its roots in the teachings of Zeno of Citium, who established the Stoic school of philosophy in 3rd century BCE Cyprus. Emerging during the tumultuous Hellenistic era, Stoicism offers a pathway to eudaimonic happiness through a pursuit of meaning and purpose. Central to this philosophy are four virtues — wisdom, temperance, justice, and courage — that delineate the path to a more fulfilling life.

Stoicism provides a structured approach for tempering our emotional responses to pain and hardship. In our next session, we will delve deeper into the four virtues of Stoicism, aiming to animate these ancient yet profoundly relevant principles within our contemporary daily existence.

The term “stoic” is generally used to describe a person that is able to face adversity calmly and without excess emotion. Mastering one’s emotions stands as a paramount challenge in life. If this resonates with you, The Female Stoic endeavors to serve as a platform for learning, practice, and transformation, facilitating the discovery of one’s inner Stoic.
